In the oncology section of this issue of Orthopedic Clinics of North America , we learn about promising new technologies for fixation of orthopedic implants into diaphyseal bone. In “Novel Applications of Osseointegration in Orthopedic Limb Salvage Surgery,” Dr Monument and coauthors review the scientific underpinnings of osseointegration and the short- to intermediate-term results of a device manufactured by one of the major orthopedic implant makers.
The appeal of this technique in some oncologic settings is clear, such as when only a short diaphyseal segment is available for fixation or very young pediatric patients where durable long-term fixation is critical. However, the authors go further and discuss potential applications for this technology in revision arthroplasty and even amputation surgery.
Dr Monument recently completed his fellowship at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah and is currently on staff at The University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.
