Glomerulonephritis

Chapter 55 Glomerulonephritis

Glomerular injury is an important cause of renal failure. The term glomerulonephritis is used rather loosely for any disease process affecting the glomeruli, although processes in which there is no infiltrate of inflammatory cells are sometimes called glomerulopathies. Sometimes, the glomerular injury can be the primary disease process, but glomerulonephritis can also occur as a complication of other conditions, in which case the term secondary glomerulonephritis can be used. Secondary glomerulonephritis is common and is seen in a wide variety of different diseases, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Renal biopsy is commonly used in the investigation of glomerulonephritis because the pattern of glomerular injury can be a clue to the aetiology and/or prognosis.
