Ear Injury



Description


Injury to the ear may include a laceration (cut) from a sharp instrument or fingernail, a contusion (bruising), or injury to the eardrum or internal ear.



Frequent signs and symptoms



• Contusion or laceration of the ear may result in pain, swelling, bleeding, and bruising of the skin around the ear.

• Internal injury may result in loss of hearing, ringing in the ear, loss of equilibrium, or bleeding from a ruptured eardrum.


Causes



• A direct blow to the ear

• Grasping and twisting of the ear

• Insertion of a sharp object into the ear


Factors that increase risk



• Contact sports, especially rugby, wrestling, boxing, and martial arts

• Diving

• Ill-fitting headgear


Preventive measures


Use only properly fitting protective gear, including helmets and ear guards.



Expected outcome


Contusions and lacerations of the ear may require 10 to 14 days to heal. Other types of ear injuries heal without complications if they are diagnosed and treated quickly. In some cases, hearing loss after an injury is permanent.
