Drug Abuse and Addiction Description Drugs that cause addiction include illicit and prescription drugs as well as substances often not recognized as drugs. Commonly abused illicit drugs include marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, hallucinogens, and heroin. Some prescribed drugs that are abused and can result in addiction are narcotic pain relievers such as hydrocodone (Vicodin) and codeine as well as sleeping remedies. Other addictive substances include alcohol and nicotine. There are two types of addiction: physical and emotional. Physical addiction results from prolonged use of a substance. Emotional dependence can also be difficult to overcome; this is the craving for the “high” that some drugs cause. Emotional addicts always want this high instead of the normal feelings they have when not using the drug.< div class='tao-gold-member'> Only gold members can continue reading.
