Corticosteroids Description Corticosteroids are a group of hormones that may be produced by the body or synthesized in a laboratory. They have many different effects on protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism and on the body’s response to both mental and physical stress and illness. Why athletes use them Athletes most often use oral steroids to reduce pain and inflammation. However, corticosteroids also increase the production of red blood cells, which can improve athletic performance.
