Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)



Description


Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eyelid’s underside and white part of the eye, the conjunctiva. It is contagious and easily transmitted, particularly to athletes on the same team who have close daily contact or in crowded or unsanitary athletic facilities. Conjunctivitis may affect one or both eyes.



Frequent signs and symptoms



• Eye pain

• Intense itching

• Swollen eyelids

• Clear, green, or yellow discharge from the eye

• When awakening in the morning, crusts on the eyelashes that may cause the eyelids to stick together

• Sensitivity to bright light

• Redness and a gritty feeling in the eye


Causes



• Viral infection; conjunctivitis may accompany colds or diseases such as measles.

• Bacterial infection

• Chemical irritation or wind, dust, smoke, and other types of air pollution

• Allergies caused by cosmetics, pollen, or other allergens

• A partially closed tear duct

• Intense light, such as from sunlamps or snow or water reflection
