Concussion in Sports

Scott R. Laker, MD, Editor
Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the issue of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America on concussion in sports. Few topics have seen such an increase in public awareness and medical knowledge in the last decade. We aim to update our readers on the most up-to-date information available on sports-related concussion, drawing on the original articles as a starting point for our new work from the initial concussion issue in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America in 2007 edited by Drs Bell and Herring.

This update gives the reader a comprehensive look at the state of the art in sport-related concussion. This issue brings the reader from pathophysiology to sideline diagnosis and management, from initial symptom management, active rehabilitation, and school interventions to the management of prolonged symptoms, and an exploration into imaging and neuropsychology, with a discussion of the impressive spread of concussion legislation, and our current understanding of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to our authors, far and wide, for their time and dedication to this issue. They are all experts in this field with decades of experience to their names. It has been a pleasure to read and be a small part of their work. I would also like to extend my personal thanks to Elsevier and Don Mumford for their strong commitment to excellence in academic writing.

I would also like to extend thanks to the athletes and families that have worked so tirelessly to make our sports world safer for youth athletes.

Personally, I would like to dedicate this issue to my friend and mentor, Dr Stanley Herring, for his career’s work in the care and advocacy of youth athletes everywhere.

Yours truly,
