Cerumen Impaction Description Cerumen is the wax that is secreted by the skin structures of the external ear canal. Cerumen impaction is the presence of excessive wax buildup. This excess wax can cause abnormal function and pain in the ear. Wax is produced at different rates in different individuals. Ear canals are also configured differently, and some may result in problematic drainage of wax or removal of wax. Contrary to popular opinion, wax removal is not a necessary function of normal hygiene, and it may be better not to use swabs in the ear canal.
