Amino Acid Supplementation Description Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are also used to make energy for the body. They are generally divided into two groups: essential and nonessential. The essential amino acids are required by the body and are present in foods that have “complete” protein, such as chicken. Foods such as rice do not have complete protein and must be combined with other foods, such as beans, to supply the appropriate amounts of essential amino acids. Recently, supplementation of individual amino acids has become common practice among a variety of athletes. Why athletes supplement with amino acids Some strength athletes believe that ingestion of specific amino acids, such as arginine and lysine, will stimulate growth hormone release and increase development of muscle mass. Endurance athletes have used branched-chain amino acids such as leucine to reduce fatigue during training.
