zone of optimal functioning (ZOF) in sport psychology, a model of optimal performance, proposed in 1980 by Russian psychologist Yuri L Hanin, that hypothesizes a bandwidth of arousal within which an athlete will perform at their optimal level. This bandwidth is held to be different for different individuals with some performing better within higher bandwidths and others within lower bandwidths. In acknowledgement of these individual differences, the model was later renamed the individual zone of optimal functioning model (IZOF). The more recent conceptualization also extends the model to include optimal patterns of positive and negative affect, taking account of particular emotions that might influence different performers differently and the optimal intensity of those emotions.
