Tinea Cruris (Jock Itch)



Description


Tinea cruris is an infection of the skin in the groin with one of several types of fungus. These fungi thrive in the groin, where the darkness, warmth, and moisture stimulate their growth. Jock itch is more likely to occur in men than in women, and it may be spread from person to person.



Common signs and symptoms



• Itching of the involved area

• Scaling patches with well-defined edges on the skin of the upper thigh, buttocks, and groin (but usually not the scrotum)

• Small, pus-filled blisters (occasionally)

• Burning or stinging pain, especially if the skin becomes secondarily infected with bacteria

• Redness of the skin in the groin area


Causes


Fungal infection of the groin may be caused by fungus from the feet that has spread to the groin area.



Factors that increase risk



• Hot, humid weather, usually warm summer months

• Poor hygiene, especially not bathing or showering after exercise or sports activities

• A family or team member with jock itch

• Contact with infected surfaces, such as towels or benches

• Excessive sweating
