Temperature-Controlling and Temperature-Sensing Devices

Four types of temperature-controlling devices are used commonly in the intensive care unit (ICU): the cooling/heating blanket, the heated water-filled mattress, the radiant warmer, and the incubator. The cooling/heating blanket can be placed between the patient and the bed, thereby controlling the temperature while maintaining easy access to the patient. The blanket is particularly useful for children who weigh more than 6 kg because radiant warming devices are not made to fit children this size. New, safe, and effective blankets that circulate heated or cooled air are available; these blankets are placed over the child. The radiant warming device is an electronic heating apparatus. A heated coil placed above the patient radiates heat toward the child; the temperature can be preset or regulated through a servomechanism connected to the child. Research has shown that a heated water–filled mattress is superior to a radiant warmer in preventing heat loss. The standard incubator provides warming by circulating humidified warm air.
