Impetigo (Pyoderma)

Description

Impetigo is a common contagious bacterial infection that affects the superficial layers of the skin. It can involve the skin anywhere on the body, although the head and neck are most often affected. Impetigo can affect people of all ages, but it is mostly seen in infants and children. It is also found in athletes, in those who participate in vigorous physical activity that causes excessive sweating, and in sports with close physical contact.

Frequent signs and symptoms

• A red rash with many small blisters; some blisters contain pus, and yellow or honey-colored crusts form when they break.

• The blisters do not hurt, but they may itch.

• Impetigo may occur with a slight fever, but this is uncommon.

Causes

Impetigo is caused by staphylococcal or streptococcal bacteria, or both, growing in the upper skin layers.

Factors that increase risk

• Fair skin

• Skin that is sensitive to sun and irritants, such as soap and makeup

• Increased perspiration from physical exertion

• Poor nutrition

• Illness that has lowered the immunity

• Warm, moist weather

• Crowded or unsanitary conditions, such as in locker rooms and with sharing towels
