Hypertrophic nonunion of the humeral shaft

Case description


A 28-year-old man sustained a Müller AO Classification type A humeral closed shaft fracture in a car accident. Initial treatment was a functional brace for 4 months until the fracture seemed clinically healed. The patient was never really free of symptoms and came back with a hypertrophic nonunion after 9 months. The nonunion was treated with a locked unreamed humeral nail (UHN), introduced distally without the need for reduction.



Indication


This nonunion of the diaphysis of the humerus resulted in mild discomfort with visible swelling, pain, and muscle weakness.
