In this issue of the Orthopedic Clinics of North America , we present several interesting articles in the Upper Extremity section reviewing a broad range of topics.

Gillespie and colleagues present a comparative review of the various surgical exposure options for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The utilization of the “reverse” technique has grown steadily in recent years for both traumatic and arthritic conditions. Two prevalent exposures are currently used, including the deltopectoral and anterosuperior approaches, each with their influence on implant position and clinical outcome. The authors review the various approaches and subsequent radiographic positioning and potential complications.

Stucken and Cohen present a detailed review of acromioclavicular injuries. These common injuries are classified into six types with treatment options spanning nonoperative to operative reconstruction. Type III injuries are the most controversial, with nonoperative, repair, and reconstruction options. A review of the varied options and strategies are reviewed for each type.

Lutsky and colleagues present a detailed review of the surgical management of flexor tendon injuries of the hand. These lesions are among the most common but also the most challenging traumatic conditions of the hand. Successful treatment is predicated on careful diagnosis, atraumatic surgical exposure, thoughtful surgical repair, and closely supervised therapy. The authors review the various challenges and subsequent strategies to successfully manage these difficult injuries.
