Socio-professional and family reintegration of patients having suffered a breast cancer with a deconditioning

Opinion/Feedback

The Montévrain clinic wants to be a medical center oriented towards autonomy and recovery of patient autonomy, reintegration within the family, as well as social and professional reintegration.

After studying the care offer and the population base in Seine et Marne, we wanted to get involved in order to improve the capacity of patients treated for breast cancer, suffering deconditioning, with or without joint limitation and functional impairment, with or without a mental deterioration. We studied the recommendations of the “plan cancer III”, researched the tertiary phase of cancer treatment and studied literature about evaluation of the physical and mental condition.

Our multidisciplinary approach (doctor, educator in adapted physical activity, physical therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, nurse, dietician) allows patients to receive specific individual and group care. The objectives are to recondition to effort, build muscle and improve body composition, improve mobility, upgrade the image and self-perception, decrease pain and fatigue.

After medical consultation, tests are carried out to establish an initial, intermediate, final and remote assessment on physical fitness, mobility and mental state. The program lasts 12 weeks, three days a week with a homogeneous group of patients.

We recorded a strong improvement physically from the first months of management with consolidation of the capacity, confirmed by the results remotely. Psychological tests show improvement late in the program. On the functional level, the improvement between the final and remote balance proves the transposition of what has been acquired, the integration capabilities with adaptation of the patients based on the elements acquired during the program. Our patients have been participating in the Odyssea race since 2014.

Our program is supported by the ARS through a FIR financing obtained in December 2015. We belong to the OPERA/GOSPEL network and have links with the services of radiotherapy and oncology. Our goal would be to be part of the initial treatment projects of the patients.
