Chondromyxoid Fibroma




CLINICAL SUMMARY


Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign bone tumor with a predilection for the metaphysis of long bones and a distinctive histologic appearance. Curettage is adequate for most cases.




DIAGNOSTIC FEATURES





















History


  • Adolescents and young adults; 60% younger than 30 years of age



  • Mild, deep bone pain

Location


  • Metaphyseal



  • Eccentric or cortical in long bones



  • Central when in short tubular or flat bones

Margins


  • Geographic lysis; typically narrow, occasionally wide, zone of transition



  • Lobulated margins, expanded and thinned cortex

Matrix


  • Matrix mineralization is not seen radiographically in the majority of cases



  • Subtle chondroid mineralization may be visible on CT
